AVID Visitors Handbook

Supporting volunteer visitors

Visiting people being held in immigration detention is a rewarding, but often demanding role, in which volunteers can find themselves dealing with complex and challenging situations.

To help ensure that all visitors have access to the information and support they need to provide the best possible support to those being held in detention, since 1995, AVID has worked with its member visitor groups to produce and continuously update the Handbook for Visitors.

Now in its seventh edition, the Handbook provides a wide range of essential information on topics including legal and medical issues in detention, changes to policy and practice, and visiting skills.  With tips and resources throughout, it’s a valuable toolkit for anyone interested in immigration detention, whether you are new to visiting, thinking of becoming a visitor, or an experienced volunteer.
