Training Opportunity for Volunteer Visitors!

Hearing Voices / Working with Vulnerable People in Detention

AVID is pleased to be partnering with MIND in Camden to offer a new training opportunity for volunteer visitors working with vulnerable people in detention.

This ‘Hearing Voices’ training course will specifically develop knowledge and awareness around hearing voices, and provide visitors with a grounding in skills to support people detained in detention centres and prisons who hear voices or are struggling with mental ill health.

Please note: the training will be offered over two consecutive evenings and is for AVID members only. Please only book a place if you can commit to both sessions.

Where and When?

23rd April and 30th April 18.00-20.00 (please make sure you can attend both)

AVID, WeWork Keltan House, 115 Mare Street, London, E8 4RU

Why is this useful?

According to the Ministry of Justice (2013), 25% of women and 15% of men detained in prison report symptoms indicative of 'psychosis' (including distress around hearing voices, seeing things or beliefs). This percentage is likely to be much higher in detention centres and amongst people detained in prisons, as many will have experienced some form of trauma in their life before detention. As volunteer visitors, we may come across people who are vulnerable or who are struggling to deal with traumatic experiences. This can be challenging and difficult to navigate.

About the course:

Training will lead to better understanding of how hearing voices, seeing visions, having other sensory experiences and beliefs might affect people who are detained, helping you in your role as a visitor to offer informed support.  There is a great deal of misinformation and stigma relating to psychosis and it is therefore important that we learn as much as possible so that we can help others experiencing symptoms in detention. This will be also a great chance to hear from other visitors groups across the UK.

Topics include:

1. Exploring diverse experiences & understandings of voices, visions and 'psychosis'

2. Coping strategies

3. Pathways to Recovery
