AVID is looking for a volunteer fundraiser who is available for one day per week for a period of 4-6 months.  This is a great opportunity for someone who is a self-starter, passionate about supporting the development of a small charity and gaining invaluable fundraising experience along the way. We need someone to support our fundraising activities with a particular focus on trusts and foundations, which is critical to an organization of our size. We’re looking for a volunteer to use our existing system to research potential small trust funders, identify possible suitable matches, and be responsible for following this through to making contact with donors and generating applications on a regular basis. For the right candidate, this is a good opportunity to gain research and writing skills, as well as first-hand knowledge of the funding environment for human rights NGOs.  Alongside this, we would like the volunteer to explore potential events fundraising options including researching potential ideas and running events.

For this role, it is essential that you have strong research skills, skills in information collation and dissemination, and an interest in asylum and human rights issues as well as the existing experience of working in an office environment. Knowledge and understanding of fundraising processes would be an advantage, but training will be given. We would require you to commit to a minimum of one day a week for 4-6 months. Duration:

The volunteer should be able to commit at least 1 day per week for a minimum of 4-6 months

Location:

The volunteer will be based in our office in Hackney, East London.

Remuneration:

This is an unpaid, voluntary role. We will reimburse reasonable travel expenses agreed in advance, and lunch expenses of up to £5 a day.

Skills and experience required:

Essential

  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Strong written communication skills, confident telephone manner
  • Knowledge of information systems and excellent analytical and numerical skills
  • Ability to engage with thematic subject area, carrying out independent research
  • Ability to work independently and to definitive timescales
  • Ability to carry out research on a variety of sources using the internet
  • Ability to identify, collate, and summarise information succinctly and accurately
  • Able to commit to 4-6 month placement
  • Understanding of and commitment to equal opportunities

Desirable

  • Previous work experience in an office environment and working knowledge of charitable sector
  • Previous fundraising experience or similar (marketing, communications, research)
  • Knowledge and understanding of migration, refugee and asylum issues and/or immigration detention
  • Experience of organising events
